About the CornFest…As the sun climbs slowly in the sky a rusty truck rattles its way up a dirt road. The driver looks to his left and sees a cornfield bustling with workers. Down every row it seems there must be a dozen or so people, both young and old, busily picking and harvesting ears of corn. Spying the farmer, the driver stops his truck and waves him over. “Hey Hank,” he says, “how’d you ever afford all these workers?”"I’m not paying them,” replies the farmer, “they’re working for free, see, the sooner the harvest is in, the sooner we can have the CornFest!”It’s a tradition which has been handed down from generation to generation throughout history, the Harvest Festival. Ancient farming tribes would hold a great celebration at the time of harvest, offering up sacrifices to their gods in hope of gaining favor for good yield in the following year. Here in America we follow that tradition with our own CornFest, or Sweet Corn Festival. Why corn?

Probably the main reason we have a CornFest instead of a PeaFest or BroccoliFest is that the grain we call corn, or maize as the American Indians originally knew it, is a native of America. In England, ‘corn’ is a type of wheat. In Scotland and Ireland, ‘corn’ means oats. In America, ‘corn’ is the term for maize, a tall form of grass domesticated and grown as food by Native American Indians long before any Europeans ventured across the sea. According to History, the natives brought maize to the table at the first Thanksgiving. In Mohave County, the Mohave Mesa Kiwanis in cooperation with many good-hearted local businesses put together the annual CornFest, a celebration of the corn harvest and an opportunity to join together as a community to enrich ours and our neighbors lives. This will mark the eighth year for the CornFest, which has continued to grow in popularity every year. This year approximately 30,000 guests enjoyed the music, games, food, contests, and entertainment at the two day CornFest celebration, and the proceeds benefit more than 35 charity organizations local to the Tri-State area. The Mohave Mesa Kiwanis and other CornFest supporters have worked hard to make this years celebration the best one yet. It took place September 29th and 30th, 2000 and was a tremendous success. Stay tuned for more info to come.

After all of this a few of you may still be wondering, ‘What or who is Cornzilla, anyway?’ A few years back, the Mohave Mesa Kiwanis was looking for some kind of symbol to set their CornFest apart from others found across the country. They enlisted the help of an unknown but very talented cartoonist by the name of Darryle Purcell, who turned an ordinary ear of corn into a monstrous cob capable of devouring entire towns or bus-loads of politicians, and Cornzilla was born. Cornzilla has continued to represent the CornFest each year thereafter, except last year when he took a well deserved vacation and allowed Y2Corn to fill in.
